1. Viljandi
Viljandi is a small town in south of Estonia. The city has a rich history dating back almost 2600 years and many historic buildings have survived to this day. For example, ruins of castle of 16th century Viljandi Order are main attraction. However, biggest reason to visit Vijandi is annual folk music festival. Every July, city attracts up to 20,000 folk music tourists. With dozens of concerts in every imaginable place, this event is largest music festival in country.
2. Soma National Park
Soma National Park is a fascinating place. Soma National Park is basically a peat swamp formed by melting of glaciers over 10,000 years ago, cut through by several beautiful rivers. The best way to explore Soma is by canoe. You can rent a canoe or take a self-guided tour and while paddling you will see deer, elk, wild boars, beavers, golden eagles and many more. Kayaking is especially popular in spring, or fifth season as locals call it. At this time of year, water level rises so much that sometimes only way to get around is by boat.
3. Rakvere Castle
Rakvere is located in Northern Estonia and has been inhabited for almost 1500 years. The biggest attraction of city is Rakvere Castle, built in 16th century. The castle has become a medieval theme park, with costumed patrons and staff. You can watch knights polish their armor, visit an alchemist's workshop and visit ancient wine cellars. In Shenkenberg castle tavern, you can even taste classic medieval dishes. A visit to castle is an unforgettable way to bring history to life.
4. Hiiuma Island
When most people think of Estonia, they don't think of an island. However, Hiiuma is only one of several islands off coast and in Baltic Sea. To get to Hiiuma Island, you can either fly from Tallinn or take a ferry from various coastal towns on mainland. Hiiumaa Island, beloved by surfers, sailors and tourists, is perfect place for those looking for peace and quiet. The island also has many interesting lighthouses. The 19th century cast iron lighthouse of Tahkuna is tallest in country. However, Gup Lighthouse is much older. Built in 15th century, Coop (K 15pu) is one of oldest lighthouses on earth.
5. Narva Castle
The city of Narva is easternmost destination in country, not to mention entire European Union. During World War II, city was bombed, but fortunately, beautiful and historic Narva Castle still stands. Also known as Hermann's Castle, castle was built in 13th century, but Danes used it as residence of deputy regent of Danish king. Inside castle there is Narva Museum and a number of craft workshops where you can see and even learn crafts used in Middle Ages. Castle tower overlooking Ivangorod castle on Russian side of river.
