5. The Ardennes
For hiking, biking and camping Stephen recommends visiting Ardennes with its dense forests, caves and rocks. Wild boar, deer and lynx live here, as well as many small villages, castles and some other famous sights. Recommended attractions include natural caves of An-sur-Lesse, Bouillon Castle and modern labyrinth of Barvaux. The city of Namur is an ideal base for exploring Ardennes and has many attractions in its own right.
4. Antwerp
Antwerp is a city with many faces. While it may not be as well-preserved historically as Bruges or Ghent, it is a lively city that offers a great mix of history and today's modern life combined with food, beer and good times. The city is known as Diamond District, selling over 70% of world's rough diamonds. Antwerp is rich in art: Revenshuis celebrates baroque work of Peter Paul Rubens, and Plantin-Moretus Museum is printing house and home of bookbinder Christoffel Plantin. Architectural marvels include Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady, built in 1351, and Baroque and Gothic architecture of majestic St. Paul's Church.
3. Ghent
Ghent is a secret city in Belgium. In Middle Ages it was one of richest and most powerful cities in Europe. Once it was considered second largest city after Paris. The influence of this rich past is clearly visible when looking at magnificent churches and houses of wealthy merchants. The entire city center was restored in this way and still breathes atmosphere of a prosperous late medieval city-state. 2. Brussels
Brussels, known for its many sights and places of interest, is capital of Belgium where most tourists begin their sightseeing experience. As headquarters of many European institutions, Brussels can also be considered capital of European Union.
The most famous is Grand Place, center of city, built in 13th century. This central square is surrounded by many cafes and bars with terraces, as well as other attractions such as impressive Gothic town hall. At this glass-roofed arcade in heart of city's most exclusive shopping street, Galeries St. Hubert, there are many shops, cafes and theaters.
1. Bruges
Located in northwest of Belgium, Bruges is one of best preserved medieval cities in Europe with Old World charm and a romantic atmosphere. Bruges was once an important center for Flemish art and textiles, and today it is known for its beautiful canals.
Bruges may be largest city in West Flanders, but it can also be explored on foot. The main attraction of Bruges is postcard Old Town. Surrounded by picturesque canals and medieval city walls, historic district is full of beautiful old buildings, including Romanesque and Gothic churches such as Santa Maria Maggiore with Michelangelo and strong>Church of Holy Blood.
The most famous landmark of city is Plaza Belfry. Visitors can climb this 13th century bell tower for stunning views of city. Other must-see attractions include imposing Gruthuse building and impressive St. John's Hospital built in 1188.
Things to do in Bruges, including visit museums that showcase city's culture, traditions and work of famous Flemish artists. Stroll cobbled streets, where dozens of shops sell delicious chocolates, Belgian beer and traditional lace.
