New York: 21st annual Mercer Quality of Life Index based on economic conditions, housing, health, utilities, safety, environment and more , occupies global position of city. Vienna wins first place for 10th year in a row. Zurich, Vancouver, Munich, Auckland, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Geneva and Basel round out top ten. San Francisco tops list of US cities, ranking 34th among all cities. The UK's highest city, London, ranks 41st, sharing it with Italy's highest city, Milan. Paris ranked 39th, New York 44th, Tokyo 49th, Beijing 120th and Baghdad 231st.
These results have generated a lot of discussion and debate, and people have been shocked that Ottawa is ranked so high (19th), Beijing is so low (120th) or that so many top ranked cities are. .. boring. . I was also asked question: "If quality of life in American cities is so low, why are so many people around world trying to move here?"
It's actually inaccurate that people from all over world are eager to travel to United States, but United States is often on doorstep. However, United States remains main destination for new immigrants. From 2010 to 2016, populations of China, Australia, Canada, Germany, and United Kingdom, which account for about two-thirds of US population, increased by 23%.
Don't Americans immigrate to other countries? There is a reason for this. One of them is that Americans (the poor), who benefit most from Scandinavian social democracy, usually cannot afford to live in Europe and it is difficult for them to get permission to stay in Europe.
In contrast, those Europeans who immigrate to United States tend to be well educated, and United States has lower tax rates and higher incomes than Europe. These entrepreneurs also tend to be more likely to stay.
Since World War II, United States has been planet's central cultural, economic, military, political, scientific, and technological power. For many wealthy people currently living elsewhere in US, this is reason they are here. What's more, most Americans know very little about world outside US, and some even stop at more than 20 years ago!
Although in past world preferred to center around United States. But in terms of purchasing power, China's economic development is much higher now. America actually has a lot of problems:Airports aren't great, immigration and customs are a hassle, transportation capacity is weak, health care, education and taxes can be very difficult, you can get shot, and so on. Overall, for such a wealthy country, United States scores low on most objective measures of well-being.
