The UK education system is divided into four main parts, namely primary, secondary, additional and higher. Children in UK are required by law to attend primary and secondary education between ages of 5 and 16.

The UK education system is also divided into "key milestones" as follows:

Key Stage 1: 5 to 7 years

Key Stage 2: Ages 7 to 11

Key Stage 3: Ages 11 to 14

Key Stage 4: Ages 14 to 16

Typically, Key Stages 1 and 2 take place in elementary school, and at age 11, students move on to secondary school and complete Key Stages 3 and 4.

Students are assessed at end of each period. The most important assessment takes place at age 16, when students prepare for GCSE, or General Certificate of Education. Once students have completed their GCSEs, they have opportunity to continue further education before potentially pursuing a higher education or completing their studies and starting work.
