Here we are! After so many dreams and a lot of work, today, Saturday October the 31st, the site and the blog “I’m a solo traveller because…” is finally online. Ok, we had the decency not to call this post “pink bow”, but the truth is that we would like to talk about desire, conception, gestation and birth since we consider this project a bit like a baby, a baby girl of all us solo she-travellers.
The two of us, Dana and Elena, met years ago through a common friend, Elisa, a solo traveller and an active part of the Facebook group. We always enjoyed talking about travels and there was a time when we dreamt to relocate to Australia (Dana) or to India (Elena), but we were still into a standard kind of life even if not satisfied by it.
We are not in those two countries, but we both changed our lives starting travelling alone.
While working on her personal blog, Dana wrote the title “I’m a solo traveller because…”; looking at it she thought: “I should do something with this!“. And the more she was writing about her solo travelling, the more she was dreaming about creating a network of solo she-travellers. She then decided to collect stories about women travellers, and asked Elena to write one. It had to be a simple message just to open a new world to both of them. Indeed, on the other side, Elena (who has been starting a nomadic life since a couple of years) was looking for a way to speak about her travels and to share all the joys of this kind of life. But as a technological clumsy, she didn’t know how to get down with the project. So getting Dana’s request she thought: “I do not believe that things happen by chance, so I will shamelessly tell to Dana my ideas and ask her if she needs help”. After this texting, after many jumps for joy (yes, Elena was literally dancing in the street), and many smiles (Dana is a bit quieter), we sat in a pub drinking brandy and telling each other our ideas, which mixed up. And so it “I’m a solo traveller because…” was born.
The gestation ran between Italy and Malta (god bless Skype!). Elena was writing, correcting what he had written again and again and again; meanwhile Dana was working on graphics with accuracy and determination (ahem … well, there was only that brief slowdown when Elena underlined that the little woman of the logo was “weird” and kept asking Dana to change it, saying for example that “the heart is too close to the armpit”), and taught Elena how to use WordPress (at least a little …).
Here this story ends, and another begins: the story of all of us! The Facebook group “I’m a solo traveller because…” was born in August and it has been keeping growing, we are more than three hundred members now. There we talk, recommend and support each other, every day creating a network of solo she-travellers wider and more welcoming.
We consider this group as the core of the whole project, not only to be used by women who travel alone, but made of them and by them.
Today the site-blog comes out, and we wish is going to collect the experiences of all of us and much more. Like a newborn baby girl it is still tiny but she already has her constitutive basic (Dana specifies that it is the Beta version, Elena looks at her with eyes wide open!).
It is going to grow, cared and fed by all of us women. Follow her first steps!
